REVIEW: Zestfest: RIIKI, Model Motel and Androgynous Lemon
Something Something’s Official Gig Review Checklist
Here at Something Something, we feel that gig reviews tend to ignore the basics, bag on the hard working musicians, and leave little room for the next artists to improve their events, at the end of the day sometimes you just want to know if there is good selfie lighting. However we’ve constructed a Gig Review Checklist through the lens of a more industry perspective.
This is how we felt the gig ‘Zestfest’ featuring an outstanding line up consisting of: RIIKI, Model Motel and Androgynous Lemon last Thursday night at Caroline!
We’ve scored them out of one to five SOMETHINGS in each of our crucial gig requirements:
(1 being ‘not your best’, 5 being ‘wow amazing!’)
Promotions: 4 SOMETHINGS
Good imagery, consistent aesthetic, I saw the posters and online campaign regularly. The posters were mostly targeted towards students, so I would love to see more posters outside of university to potentially draw in a more diverse crowd.
Turnout: 4 SOMETHINGS
Great turn out, no lines to the bar, no traffic in the b-room, even scored myself a free drink.
Atmosphere: 4 SOMETHINGS
This one depended quite a lot on the act, with each performance bringing their own flavour and atmosphere. The first two acts had a great turnout and the audience responded very well. The last act lacked the audience which was a shame and this affected the atmosphere.
Sound: 4 SOMETHINGS
Pretty good but lacked quality in parts throughout the night. Overall, pretty solid.
Venue: 4 SOMETHINGS
Caroline already has a reputation for being a standout Wellington venue with a great layout. Great place with very friendly staff. Didn’t disappoint,.
Bathroom: 1 SOMETHING…
Small, loud and stuffy. Not very pleasant.
Bar/food: 4 SOMETHINGS
Chips were a solid stomach liner, but they were out of mac and cheese balls and broccoli croquettes so that was pretty lame. Definitely a good drink selection including the super delicious Zeffer cider.
