Introducing: Supercuts
Supercuts is an exciting, new Artist/DJ platform and brand. Run by two pioneering astro-protagonists (names unknown) bringing you music and content from Deep Space (Wellington), Supercuts looks to bring you otherwordly sounds produced and performed by the Universe’s best.
We at SomethingSomething managed to gain contact with one of the two talented minds behind the brand. We asked the important questions and here are your answers:
What is Supercuts?
”Supercuts is an initiative that looks to bring a Universe of local Wellington talent to a quickly developing following, ranging across a variety of social platforms. This includes YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok primarily. For the last 5 months, Supercuts has been recruiting local DJs and Artists into their studio space with the aim of showcasing and promoting their mahi with a primary focus on authentic Wellington talent. Supercuts comes with a strong kaupapa to re-establish our local nightlife in Wellington, producing quality atmospheres and spaces for people to dance again”.
What kind of content are you making/wanting to make in the future?
“I think firstly the content we wanted to bring to the table was original and local music from Wellington and the wider NZ community with a primary focus on the electronic scene. We had established that from the very beginning. From there, the question was how do we portray that in a way that is effective and captures an audience? The idea to create a Studio was the first thing we set out to do content-wise. We knew that putting a face to the music offered a different perspective and a more engaging experience and therefore became the center of the content we were making. We also have a running comic that looks to expand on that idea of creating a fresh perspective content-wise and also wanting to add more depth to our artists and most importantly to the music they play”.

Who do you work with?
“Currently, Supercuts has been connecting with DJs all across Wellington. If you want to connect with us, flick us a DM on our Instagram @Supercutsnz or email us at Supercutsnz@gmail.com”.
What inspired the creation of supercuts?
“Supercuts came to be for a few reasons. The first was obviously a love for dance music which had captivated us since we were both in high school. But Supercuts itself comes from a real desire to re-establish a scene here in Wellington. It was said to me on a few occasions earlier in the year that the reason for its downfall here in Wellington was due to a lack of artists, promoters or whoever. I thought then and still feel now this is complete bullshit, the past few months have only proven that further to us. The creation of Supercuts really came as a way to do our piece for the kaupapa which we believe is giving more representation to our local artists and building communities in the process.”
What are the brand’s current and long-term goals?
“Currently, our main goal is to connect with as many DJs, producers and other artists as we can and get those people through our studio and onto our pages. We want to give exposure to as many local artists as we can! Gigs are also something we are looking forward to, we would love to take local artists and put them in front of crowds so we are currently working towards that”.
What separates supercuts from other brands?
“I think on the surface you could draw a lot of comparisons between us and other labels, here in Wellington and across the motu there are so many awesome groups and people who are supporting local artists, some of which have been doing so for years. We have always maintained that Supercuts is just another piece in the puzzle to support that Kaupapa. We’re only just finding our feet so it's hard to find exactly what separates us. What we can say is that Supercuts is dedicated to doing the small things right - sound, lighting and all aspects that contribute to great atmospheres sit at the top of the list on our end. Creating more intimate spaces with a focus on building community and direct fan to artist engagement will be essential for the future of the music scene”.
